In 2023, a growing concern echoed across our classrooms- learners were losing interest in mathematics. Many struggled with fundamental concepts like integers, factorisation, and basic algebraic equations. The learning gaps were deep, worsened by the pandemic disruptions and a lack of collaborative learning.
To address this, 489Movement SMACKE NPC launched the Mathematics Le Conference (MaLeCo) at the end of Term 1 in 2023. Learners from Grades 9 to 12 were invited to participate in this learner-centred, hands-on mathematics intervention
The response? Incredible.
Learners who had once dreaded numbers began engaging with confidence. MaLeCo not only focused on conceptual understanding, but also included group collaboration, peer presentations, and the use of everyday tools like smartphones and physical instruments to bring math to life.
The Impact
The real victory came in the results.
- In 2024, the school achieved a 100% pass rate in Grade 12 Mathematics
- Many learners who attended MaLeCo in 2023 (then in Grade 11) were part of this cohort
- Some of them are now pursuing BCom degree at a university
- One learner from a partnering school even achieved a distinction in Mathematics
MaLeCo Continues in 2025
At the end of Term 2 in 2025, we hosted another MaLeCo session, this time addressing Trigonometry and Euclidean Geometry – two of the most challenging topics for learners. Using technology, real-life models, and interactive tools, learners explored geometry not just on paper, but through movement, visual and group tasks.
The feedback?
“I never understood geometry until we used rulers, string, and our phones to trace and measure shapes ourselves.” – Grade 11 learner.
Looking Ahead
MaLeCo is now an annual mathematics intervention hosted under our Knowledge Desk. It continues to evolve and respond to the needs of our learners – with a commitment to making mathematics accessible, engaging, and empowering.

Great stuff. Keep on moving 💯.
